Once a Longhorn, Always a Longhorn
A.E. Bubba Harris, BBA ’49, celebrates his 98th birthday in January 2025. Harris is a World War II veteran who played quarterback for the Longhorns B-team in the fall of 1944, running plays against the starting defense. He received his draft notice in January 1945 and served in the Navy as a Petty Officer in Electronic Training.
When the war ended, he was asked if he wanted to make a career in the Navy, to which Bubba said, “No, I want to play football for Texas.” He was discharged and hitchhiked home to re-enroll at UT under the GI bill.
Switching to intramural sports, he won championships for Kappa Alpha in football and water polo and served as the fraternity’s intramural chairman. He went on to forge a successful career building military base housing in Corpus Christi and remained a proud season ticket holder for many years.
With a house adorned with Longhorns memorabilia and the dozens of trophies he earned as a small boat sailor, he is the sole living founding member of Lake Canyon Yacht Club, which was formed in 1964 after the lake was established on the Guadalupe River.
