Texas Golfers And Tennis Players Win Conference Awards

The University of Texas Tower lit orange

Get your Horns up, and let that chest swell: UT athletes have been racking up awards this week.

Sophomore golfer Dylan Frittelli was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, and senior Shannon Fish was named to the 2010 All-Big 12 Women’s Golf Team.

Freshman golfer Cody Gribble won 2010 Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year, and junior Bobby Hudson made the All-Big 12 team.

Then, after some big wins in the past week against Texas A&M and Nebraska, senior men’s tennis player Josh Zavala was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

The last time the men’s golf team swept the player of the year and newcomer of the year awards was in 1999, when David Gossett won both.

Frittelli, who is from South Africa, finished in the top 10 in eight of his 11 individual events this season. He was a semi-finalist for the the 2010 Ben Hogan Award as the most outstanding player in college golf.

His young teammate Gribble finished in the top 5 an incredible five times during his freshman season.

The top-seeded men’s tennis team earned a first-round bye in this weekend’s Big 12 Championship tournament, at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Saturday at noon, they’ll take on the winner of Friday’s match between Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

Come on out early, be loud, stay late, and wear orange. Go Horns!
