Some scholarships honor a marriage; others celebrate a lifelong career. Still others commemorate a loved one lost.

Whatever the reason, all 208 named scholarships awarded by the Texas Exes at a dinner last week will help outstanding UT students earn their degrees and achieve their goals.

Alumni donors awarded $620,230 in scholarships to 296 students this year. Seven named scholarships were awarded for the first time and announced at a ceremony last week at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center where the donors and recipients got to put faces with names.

“The named scholarship dinner is special because many students and donors get to meet each other,” says Kristy Kimball, Texas Exes scholarships coordinator. “The students realize that it’s not just a check—there’s a real person who cares about them.”

Many of the named scholarships lend a hand to students facing unique challenges or life situations. The Susan N. Sams Scholarship, for example, aids a single mother pursuing her first college degree, while the BleedOrange Scholarship helps out an undergraduate who is married.

Between chapter scholarships, named scholarships, and the new Forty Acres Scholars program, the Texas Exes will dole out $1.9 million to 681 UT students this year.
