5 Outstanding Young Texas Exes You Should Know About

Countless Longhorns have made impressive strides in their careers after leaving the Forty Acres, but not all do it by the time they turn 40. Each year since 1979, the Texas Exes has granted the Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award (OYTEX) to a handful of Texas Exes aged 39 and younger who have made significant achievements in their careers and service to the university. 

Here are five OYTEX winners from the past 10 years who have become breakout stars in their respective industries—and continue to make UT Austin proud.  

Virginia A. Cumberbatch, 2021 Outstanding Young Texas Ex   

MPAff ’16 

Storyteller, racial justice educator, organizer, and co-founder of the activism platform Rosa Rebellion, Cumberbatch’s work sits at the intersection of community advocacy and creative activism. In 2017, she co-authored (with Leslie Blair) the book, As We Saw It: The Story of Integration at The University of Texas at Austin, which tells the stories of the first Black undergraduate students to enroll at UT Austin in 1956. 

Kevin Curry, 2019 Outstanding Young Texas Ex 

BBA, BA ’05, Life Member 

With more than 1.5 million Instagram followers, Kevin Curry is a certified nutrition and wellness influencer. The founder of Fit Men Cook, an online community that promotes healthy living for men and women, he has appeared on Live! With Kelly and Ryan, TODAY, and more, and he has been featured in Forbes and Men’s Health. His book, Fit Men Cook: 100 Meal Prep Recipes for Men and Women, shot to the top of Amazon’s fitness category when it was published in December 2018. 

Catherine “Cat” Osterman, 2014 Outstanding Young Texas Ex 

BA ’07, Life Member 

The decorated softball player has achieved just about everything possible on the field. Osterman has won medals at multiple Olympics—gold in Athens in 2004, silver in Beijing in 2008, and coming out of retirement to win silver in Tokyo in 2020—held virtually every Texas and most Big 12 pitching records, tossed 20 no-hitters and seven perfect games, won USA Softball Player of the Year three times, went pro after graduating, and was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. On top of all that, Osterman also spent six years as an assistant coach at Texas State University, and now serves as director of softball for RBI Austin.  

Madhu Chugh, 2013 Outstanding Young Texas Ex 

BA ’98, BJ ’98, Life Member 

Chugh is a legal expert tackling one of the United States’ toughest issues: health care reform. Chugh was a senior associate at WilmerHale in Washington, D.C. until 2019 and was an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center. She’s worked on health care policy with Sen. John Kerry, Sen. Edward Kennedy, and Sen. Tom Daschle. Since 2019, Chugh has been an assistant United States attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. 

Andrew Phong Vo, 2013 Outstanding Young Texas Ex 

BBA ’95, Life Member 

Vo is a global business superstar dedicated to the Longhorn community. Vo—who arrived in the U.S. as a Vietnamese refugee—founded one of the University’s preeminent service organizations, the Texas Iron Spikes, and still serves as senior adviser. He’s currently the chief human resources officer of growth markets at Accenture, where he has held key leadership roles over the course of his 27-year career with the company. In January 2020, Vo was recognized at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for his help in creating the new UT Admissions Welcome Center for incoming freshmen and transfer students: the Vo Family Auditorium.
