Playing chess, making s’mores, and getting leadership training—sound like your weekend? That blend of stimulation and relaxation is part of life as a high-achieving Forty Acres Scholar.
The inaugural class of scholars retreated to T Bar M Ranch in New Braunfels Aug. 11-14 for some “active R&R.”
It meant everything from tubing the Comal River to discussing challenging summer reads.
UT faculty members stopped out to share their expertise. Geoff Tumlin conducted a leadership workshop complete with individual assessments, and Mia Carter led a book discussion of Super Sad True Love Story.
Texas Exes CEO Leslie Cedar, BS ’89, MBA ’98, Life Member, and other prominent alumni also interacted with the group.
“There were a lot of workshop activities, but they also had time to unwind,” Texas Exes scholarship director Derrick Miller says. “Chess, watersports—you name it, they did it.”
The Forty Acres Scholars program provides full-ride-plus scholarships to The University of Texas. In addition to room, board, and books, the competitive new scholarships include funding for study abroad, service-learning, and internship opportunities.
