Mike Perrin Officially Named Athletics Director
Mike Perrin could use some new business cards, but he might be just as well served by taking a Sharpie to the old ones. Named interim athletics director in September to replace the embattled former AD Steve Patterson, Perrin can now cross off the word “interim” from his title, as announced by UT today. Perrin will remain athletics director at least through the 2017-18 academic year.
Perrin, BA ’69, JD ’71, Life Member, has already made fans and administrators happy in his short time as interim AD, recently declaring that football season ticket prices would remain flat for at least the next two years and helping Texas ink a brand-new Nike apparel and licensing deal. The Nike deal is the richest in the history of college sports, worth $250 million over 15 years.
“I have been humbled and overwhelmed by the backing I’ve received from alumni, faculty and fans,” Perrin said, in a press release from Texas Athletics.
Perrin is a former Longhorn linebacker, who played under Darrell K Royal and has been involved on campus as a student, volunteer, and now employee for more than 50 years. He and his wife Melinda, BS ’69, Life Member, Distinguished Alumna, moved back to Austin from Houston after Perrin accepted the interim AD position, leaving behind a successful law career. He was a partner in numerous law firms, most recently Michael W. Perrin PLLC.
