A university of the first class is an institution with an outstanding faculty, including members of the national academies. It attracts the highest-caliber students. It has a long history of meaningful research and a budget that is comparable to other major research universities. It’s an institution that values quality over quantity and is elected to membership in the Association of American Universities.
