Remembering 9/11
In honor of our centennial, we’ve dug deep into a century’s worth of Alcalde issues to bring you a fascinating look at how the Forty Acres has changed over the years.
2001
At 12:15 on a still, hot September 14, thousands of students, faculty members, and staffers silently crowded onto the Main Mall as the Tower bell tolled for the victims of the September 11 attacks. Aerospace engineering professor Ken Liechti played “Amazing Grace” and “The Eyes of Texas” on the bagpipes, and theater and dance junior Daebreon Porter sang soulful a capella versions of the same.
UT president Larry Faulkner said, “Let us respond to this tragedy by renewing our resolve to respect the rule of law and to respect individuals, especially our neighbors in our own community. Vengeance is less important than learning how to make the world a safe and more civilized place, and less important than retaining our best character as we respond in this time.”
