UT Ranks High For Affordability
The temperature isn’t the only thing on the rise in Austin. A new ranking puts UT higher than other recent accolades for affordability. The University received its newest position last week, this time from the website AffordableCollegesOnline.org. The site listed UT number 8 out of the top 100 most affordable public universities.
The site, a repository for college cost information, used three widely recognized data sources to calculate the ranking:
- NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education. It provides consistent, reliable, complete, and accurate indicators of education status and trends.
- IPEDS is the primary federal source for data on colleges, universities, and technical and vocational postsecondary schools in the U.S.
- Carnegie Classification is a framework widely used in the study of higher education, both as a way to represent and control for institutional differences, and also in the design of research studies to ensure adequate representation of sampled institutions, students, or faculty.
UT president Bill Powers took to his blog, Tower Talk, to note that the ranking was “new confirmation” that the University offers a “world class education at an affordable price.”
UT has seen a number of positive reviews for value and affordability in the past year, including listings from Kiplinger’s and the Princeton Review. A report last winter by Southern Methodist University professor Mark McLendon concluded that UT, alongside its tier-one counterpart, Texas A&M University, is one of the best college values in the nation.
