Four Longhorns Headed to Super Bowl XLVII

For the eighth straight year, The University of Texas at Austin will be represented by former players in the Super Bowl. This time, however, it’s not just by one player—it’s four.

Texas Exes Chykie Brown and Justin Tucker will compete for the AFC’s championship team, the Ravens, while their Longhorn counterparts in the NFC, Tarell Brown and Leonard Davis, will represent the San Francisco 49ers.

These four give Texas the second-highest number of former players on active Super Bowl rosters—the University of Oregon and the University of Miami lead the count with five apiece. Texas also tops this year’s list of most players from a Big 12 school on Super Bowl rosters.

Chykie Brown and Tucker, who were teammates for three years at UT, have some experience playing for a title—they each earned two Big 12 Championships as Longhorns and were part of the 2009 team that played Alabama for the national championship. NFL rookie Tucker finished the 2012 regular season as the eighth-highest scoring player in the league.

NFL veterans Tarell Brown and Leonard Davis also have experience playing in big games. Tarell Brown was a member of the 2005 Longhorn national championship team, and Davis—one of the five largest players in the NFL at 6 feet 6 inches tall and 355 pounds)—played a key role on Mack Brown’s first three teams at Texas.

These four Longhorns are just a small part of this year’s unofficial Super Bowl theme of friendly rivalry: Ravens coach John Harbaugh and his younger brother and 49ers head coach, Jim Harbaugh, will each be vying for their first Super Bowl title against one another.

Regardless of NFL allegiances (and much like the Harbaugh family), Texas fans can rejoice knowing one thing: either way, one of their own will walk away from the game with a Super Bowl ring.

Super Bowl XLVII is slated to take place at 5:30 CST on Feb. 3 at the New Orleans Superdome.
