Texas Women’s Soccer Trounces Oklahoma 3-0
After dropping their final regular season game last Friday against West Virginia, Texas women’s soccer bounced back in a big way Wednesday, trouncing rival OU 3-0 in the first round of the Big 12 Championship.
The Longhorns, who entered the Big 12 tournament ranked seventh of eight tournament teams in goals scored, had no shortage of offense in Wednesday’s game, benefiting early from an Oklahoma own goal and netting two more of their own.
Freshman Kelsey Shimmick logged a career day, scoring both Texas goals and sending in the cross that led to the Sooners’ own goal. The goals bring Shimmick’s season total to three and puts the Grapevine, Texas, native in rarefied company—she becomes only the fourth Longhorn ever to score twice in a Big 12 tournament game. Even more impressive: she’s only one of two freshmen to have accomplished the feat.
Shimmick wasn’t the only young Longhorn to make an impact on the match. Freshman Chantale Campbell played through all 90 minutes of the contest and assisted Shimmick on Texas’ second goal. After the game, first-year head coach Angela Kelly told Texas Sports: “Chantale is a sophisticated player and is really coming into her own. And I could say that for all the freshmen. They really showed up big today.” Chantale’s twin, Emilie Campbell, also recorded an assist.
Wednesday’s game marked the first multiple-goal outing for Texas since a 3-3 overtime draw against Denver on Sept. 16. With the offensive wheels finally turning for the Longhorns, they look to carry their momentum into tonight’s semifinal match-up against TCU.
