UT Team Wins Google Social Media Award

A team of UT students beat out more than 150 competitors around the world to take Google’s first-ever Social Media Award, Google announced this week.

The students—Caroline Snavely, Kristin Carden, Kimberly Bolton, Erika Willrodt, and Ellen Webb—were named global winners for their dynamic Google+ page promoting the Impeccable Pig, a fashion boutique on South Congress.

The students entered the contest as part of their classwork for Advanced Media Strategies, an advertising class taught by senior lecturer Lisa Dobias. Dobias cites her students’ customer-centered approach as a factor in the win.

“Instead of thinking about the social media tools first, they were thinking about the consumer first,” Dobias says. “That’s how we teach media at UT—considering the consumer’s values and making the tools fit those needs.”

In addition to posting photos, updates, and special offers on the Google+ page, the team also hosted two Google Hangouts, or video chats, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the Texas AXO Fashion Show. The students collaborated with the UT sorority to include clothes from the Impeccable Pig in the show.

Their hard work paid off this week when Google named the UT group the winner. As part of the prize, the students will get to attend a social media conference and take part in a Hangout with Google executives.

“When Google emailed to tell us we won, I was just totally shocked and excited,” Caroline Snavely says. “This opens a lot of doors.”
