Teen Reunites Life Member With Lost Key Tag
When Savanna Hailey saw a sparkle glinting in the dirt near her Huffman, Texas home in mid-June, curiosity got the better of the 15-year-old.
At first Hailey thought her shiny new discovery was a silver dollar. But after flipping the metal over in her hands, she discovered the Texas Exes address engraved on the back with the words, “If found, drop in any mailbox.”
And so she did.
Curious and eager to help, Hailey wrote a letter to the Texas Exes, accompanied by a sketch of her discovery (above). Brit Young, Texas Exes membership and alumni records supervisor, received the picture and mailed Hailey a letter in return, explaining that the teen had found a lost Texas Exes Life Member key tag. Along with the letter, Young sent Hailey a care package filled with Texas Exes Student Chapter swag.
“She just seemed inquisitive,” Young says. “She was very interested in this little treasure that she had found.”
Young ordered a replacement to be delivered free to the key tag’s owner, who turned out to be Angie Yeary, BJ ’94, Life Member. Though Yeary hadn’t yet realized the tag was missing, she was grateful to get it back. Since she and Hailey live near each other outside Houston, Yeary thinks the tag was lost when her four children were playing outside with her keys.
“I didn’t even realize it was gone until I received that phone call,” Yeary says. “I think her parents are doing a really good job of instilling values in her.”
Within a week, Hailey sent another letter to the Texas Exes thanking Young for the response and gifts. And Hailey’s act of kindness left a lasting impression on the Texas Exes staff as well.
“Her little picture inspired all of us,” Young says.
