Texas Chili in the Big Apple
This weekend, I had an awesome experience attending and judging the Texas Exes New York Chapter’s 19th annual chili cook-off. The New York Chili Cook-off has become something of a legend, and it is one of the biggest and best Chapter events in the country.
This year, with a sold-out crowd of 1,500 people at one of New York’s hippest outdoor venues, the chili was hot and the competition fierce. The Travel Channel was there to capture the goodness for a show about food contests. As Zoe Wilson, New York Chapter President said, “We are kind of a BIG DEAL!”
Eight other judges and I sampled 30 recipes, all of which would do a discriminating Texan proud. But it was Team Austin Chili Limits that took the winning prize (two cases of Shiner Boch beer and well-earned bragging rights). Congratulations to the winners!
Like many of our great chapter events, proceeds from the Lone Star Chili Cook-off benefit the local scholarship fund. It’s one of the best things about participating with the Texas Exes: spending a great day with people who love the University and want to keep the bond strong helped raise funds to support scholarships to send outstanding students from all over the country to UT.
Special thanks to all the Chapter volunteers who made this event possible. You do the Texas Exes proud.
Pictured above (please note this photo was taken after tasting all 30 chilis, and I’m still standing) is current New York chapter president Zoe Wilson and incoming president Brooke Ann Carpin.
