Texas Senior Named ROWONTARIO’s Athlete Of The Year
Yes, you read that headline right. A Texas rower has been named one of Canada’s athletes of the year.
Jennifer VanderMaarel, senior captain of UT’s rowing team and an Ontario native, cleaned up at the Royal Canadian Henley and Ontario Rowing Championships this summer and was thus bestowed the award of Athlete of the Year from ROWONTARIO.
At the Royal Canadian Henley she notched four victories, taking gold in the senior women’s and under-23 eight and 4+ races. The numbers in the races correspond to the number of rowers, with the pluses and minuses indicating the presence or absence of a coxswain.
VanderMaarel kept things up at the Ontario Rowing Championships winning two more races.
Those efforts won VanderMaarel an invite to the prestigious Canadian Rowing Championships in September, where she won the B final in the 2-.
