Texas Ex Sets World Record For Most Marathons Run In A Year

UT Law grad Larry Macon has broken the world record — his own — for most marathons run in a year. The 66-year-old San Antonio attorney completed 106 marathons in 2010, one more than he ran in 2008.

Fourteen years ago, Macon started running marathons on a dare. In his early 50s at the time, Macon took exception when someone told him he couldn’t finish a marathon at his age. Three months later, he ran his first and was hooked.

“I enjoyed it so much and realized this was not too hard,” Macon says. “I thought, ‘Let’s just see how many I can do.’”

For the next few years, he ran steadily more marathons until, in 2004, he decided to try two in one day. He competed them both.

The next year he challenged himself to do one every weekend and finished the year having run 79. He also joined the 50-state club, an elite group of marathon maniacs who have completed a marathon in all 50 states.

In 2008, Macon broke the world record for most marathons run in a year with 105.

On Dec. 31, 2010, Macon’s birthday, at the Savage Seven Marathon in Ocala, Fla., he went the extra 26.2 miles and completed his 106th of 2010.

“It’s definitely a unique birthday present,” Macon said. “And it will be hard to top this birthday next year, but never say never!”
