Trick-or-treating went to a whole new level over the weekend at Longhorn Halloween, the annual costume carnival for children of UT professors, students, and staff.
Families were captivated—and educated—by professor and dean David Laude’s Chemistry Circus, and Texas Wushu and the UT Dance Team energized the crowd. Thousands of children lined up to tour a fire engine from the Austin Fire Department and set off the siren of a UTPD police car. Student groups and University offices put on 60 booths with games and crafts for kids.
“Alpha Phi Omega did a haunted house and boy, the kids were really screaming in there!” says Susan Threadgill, director of production at UT’s Office of University Events.
In total, about 450 volunteers made it happen, and more than 3,600 children and families stopped by. The event has taken place annually since the mid-1990s.
“Longhorn Halloween is a safe place for all of the UT community parents to bring their kids, and it’s three hours of the biggest, best Halloween carnival you’ll find in the city,” says Threadgill.
