Patterson Enlists Help to Hire Mack Brown Replacement
New men’s athletic director Steve Patterson, BBA ’80, JD ’84, won’t be going it alone when it comes to finding Texas’ next head football coach.
Patterson, who’s been on the job since November, has enlisted an eight-person advisory committee comprised of UT regents, faculty members, and alumni to help find a replacement for Mack Brown, who announced he was resigning from his head coach position last week. Seven of the eight committee members were also on the committee that hired Patterson a couple months back, after 32-year AD veteran DeLoss Dodds shared his plans to retire.
This latest advisory committee includes:
- Steve Hicks, BA ’72, Life Member: vice chair of the Board of Regents, one of the board’s athletics liaisons, and owner and executive chairman of Capstar Partners LLC.
- Robert Stillwell, BBA ’59, LLB ’61, Life Member: member of the Board of Regents, one of the board’s athletics liaisons, retired partner at Baker Botts LLP, and an original director of Mesa Petroleum Co.
- Michael Clement: UT accounting professor and faculty representative to the men’s and women’s athletics councils
- Ricardo Hinojosa, BA ’72, Life Member, Distinguished Alumnus: U.S. federal judge and former member of UT’s Commission of 125
- Charles Matthews, BA ’67, Life Member, Distinguished Alumnus: former vice president and general counsel of Exxon Mobil and current Texas Exes president
- Robert Rowling, BBA ’76, Life Member, Distinguished Alumnus: former member of the Board of Regents and owner and chairman of TRT Holdings Inc.
- Charles Tate, BBA ’68, Life Member, Distinguished Alumnus: chairman of Capital Royalty and former member of UT’s Commission of 125
- Pamela Willeford, BA ’72, Life Member, Distinguished Alumna: former U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and former chair of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
Patterson has also called in Jed Hughes of executive recruiting firm Korn/Ferry International to help with the search. There’s no word on timeline for the new hire, but here’s a bit of perspective: Powers formed the athletic director advisory committee back on Oct. 14, and Patterson was named the new AD 22 days later on Nov. 5.
No matter what, Mack Brown will finish out his 16th and final season with the Longhorns by coaching the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.
