Letter from the CEO: A Day Like No Other

march 2 celebration
Students celebrate Texas Independence Day, 1986.

“Whenever two Texas Exes shall meet on March 2, they all shall sit and break bread and pay tribute to the institution that made their education possible.” That memorable command comes from a resolution adopted by the Texas Exes in 1900, and more than a century later, it’s still doing exactly what it was meant to do: bringing Longhorns together.

March 2, of course, is Texas Independence Day—a date rooted deeply in our state’s history and woven just as firmly into the traditions of The University of Texas. From the earliest days of the University, Longhorns have marked the occasion not just as Texans, but as members of a shared community shaped by this place. It’s a day for storytelling, fellowship, and a little burnt-orange pride—all things we do exceptionally well.

One of the great joys of my first Texas Independence Day as CEO has been seeing just how alive this tradition remains. Across the country and around the world, our chapters and networks are planning barbecues, breakfasts, happy hours, and gatherings of every size—many of them continuing decades-long traditions. Some of these celebrations have been happening for generations, passed down the same way our love for our alma mater is: person to person, table to table.

That continuity is something special. Our chapters and networks aren’t just social groups—they’re keepers of Longhorn history, creating moments that connect alumni across classes, careers, and geography. Whether it’s your first March 2 event or your 50th, there’s something powerful about sitting down together, breaking bread, and raising a glass to the University that brought us all here.

I can’t wait to see the photos, hear the stories, and—most importantly—feel the fellowship that defines Texas Exes everywhere. However and wherever you celebrate, thank you for helping us keep this tradition alive.
