Trending Now: Beer Delivery, Young Adult Lit, and Rompers
Leave it to three Austinites (brothers Matt and Andrew Bell and friend Gerardo Trevino) to create the first on-demand alcohol delivery app in Texas. In line with food delivery apps like GrubHub, BrewDrop allows a user to select the drinks they want and have them delivered for a $5 fee on top of the purchase price. The app acts as a middleman, comparing prices among local liquor stores and then having the store employees make deliveries, which keeps it legal. “We’re an engine that powers local business,” co-founder Matt Bell told the Austin-American Statesman. And local beer bellies, we might add.
Inspired by the popular “Humans of New York” blog, two UT students aim to answer the question: “What does a Longhorn look like?” by taking photos of interesting people around campus and posting them onto their Facebook page, often accompanied by a short quote from the subject. Their “Humans of UT” page was started in April 2014 and already has almost 2,000 fans. It’s a look into the daily lives of Longhorns, be they students, workers, or visitors passing through the Forty Acres.
Who says you have to grow up? Thanks to film adaptations like Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars, and the Hunger Games trilogy, “YA” literature has spiked to popularity levels not seen since that sparkly vampire family fought those werewolves in Washington state. Millions of college students and adults alike are flocking to bookstores to devour these stories, and YA authors like John Green have developed a cult following. Next up: an adaptation of every seventh-grader’s favorite dystopian adventure, Lois Lowry’s The Giver.
Many UT students broke out these overall-like one-pieces to beat the heat this summer. Rompers have steadily gained popularity over the last few summers, being spotted on everyone from Lena Dunham to the Coachella set. We get that Millennials are supposed to be oversized kids, but do they have to dress like them, too?
