Texas Exes Chapters Team Up For WVU Tailgate
From funding scholarships to hosting parties, more than 150 Texas Exes chapters around the globe do a lot of good and have a lot of fun—but they rarely do it together. The logistics are usually just too challenging for chapters located hundreds of miles apart to team up. That makes it all the more special when a multi-chapter event does happen.
Case in point: the D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh chapters came together in November for a 400-person tailgate at the UT vs. WVU game in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Texas Exes D.C. Chapter leader Johann Sung, BS ’04, Life Member, helped organize the tailgate. “My personal goal is that chapters should be a home away from home for alumni,” Sung says. After at least 10 conference calls with leaders in three other Mid-Atlantic chapters, Sung and his fellow Longhorns hosted more than 400 Texas Exes and friends at a festive tailgate before the WVU game on Nov. 9. What’s more, they hosted a bus to the game and worked with WVU to get a block of group tickets in the same section.
At the volunteer-run tailgate before the game, alumni wore white cowboy hats to show their Texas pride. They even managed to snag a quick photo with President Bill Powers outside the stadium.
“We had a great time,” Sung says, “and more importantly, we won the game!”
