They may not have bought into the shiny chrome trend yet, but the UT football program has made some noticeable changes to the classic burnt-orange getup this year.
The new uniforms were unveiled on July 23 in a video on the Texas Longhorns YouTube channel. Running back Joe Bergeron models what the video calls “a few new twists to a classic look.”
Some of the more noticeable changes are a new 3-D bumper on the helmets and the addition of a Longhorn logo on the neckline above the main number. Another tweak is that the secondary numbers have migrated from their usual spot on the sleeve of the jersey to the top of the shoulders.
These seem pretty minor, especially considering that Texas has a contract with Nike, the same company that cranks out Oregon’s elaborate uniforms every year. But it doesn’t seem like the ’Horns are headed that direction anytime soon. Darrell K Royal made his stance on uniforms pretty clear in his famous quote:
“I’m not going to candy this thing up. These are work clothes.”
