The Texas Exes San Antonio Chapter went big this year—really, really big.
The chapter’s annual flagship event, the Texas Tailgate, was approaching its 11th anniversary, and chapter president Jonathan Levy, BA ’05, Life Member, wanted to take things up a notch. So he called the Longhorn Network about teaming up.
The result: More than 700 alumni and friends of the University descended on the Alamodome, where an episode of the show Longhorn Extra was broadcast live. And a record-breaking $50,000 was collected for the chapter’s scholarship fund.
Former UT football players, cheerleaders, mascots, and Bevo himself were all in attendance, plus local luminaries like State Sen. Carlos Uresti and KSAT-12 reporter Isis Romero. Texas Exes CEO Leslie Cedar and past president Richard Leshin were also there.
But the real stars of the evening, says Levy, were the scholarship recipients.
“The eight scholarship recipients this year are some of the most extraordinary individuals I have ever met in my life,” Levy says. “We had three class presidents, two National Merit Scholars, captains of sports teams, and leaders of honor societies. And many of them did all this while working, supporting their families.”
The scholars, Levy says, were excited to see their names on the Alamodome’s giant jumbotron. But the chapter members were even more excited to enable top students to attend UT.
“We’re really proud that they will be representing San Antonio,” Levy says.
