Pigskin Harem: UT’s 1938 Football Team
Historical research can be dry—until you stumble onto a photo like this!
That’s what recently happened to UT architecture professor (and UT Heritage Society steering committee member) Richard Cleary.
Doing research on another topic, Cleary says he was “flipping through an issue of Life magazine, looking for something else, when this photo caught my eye.
“It is pretty funny,” he says with just a touch of understatement. We say it’s solid gold.
Apparently the 1938 football team had been persuaded to take part in Time Staggers On, an all-campus musical. Their act included a sultan, his dancing “girls,” a new wife, and the favorites.
Coach Dana X. Bible, who was asked to take on the sultan’s role, was reported to have declined.
