Hispanic Enrollment at UT Reaches All-Time High
The University of Texas at Austin has more Hispanic students than ever. Continuing a steady upward trend, 17.5 percent of the student body is now Hispanic, according to a University announcement.
Yet UT still has a long way to go until its student body reflects the demographics of the state. U.S. Census data from 201o shows that 37.6 percent of Texans are Hispanic.
Other findings:
- Fifty-one percent of students identify as white only, down from 52 percent last year.
- Though the overall percentage of Hispanic students increased, the percentage of Hispanic incoming freshmen decreased from 23 percent to 21 percent. This drop is attributed to economic hardship and cuts in financial aid.
- At least 23.7 percent of UT freshmen are first-generation college students.
