Flying Longhorns Celebrate 50 Years of Globe-trotting

The Texas Exes’ travel program, the Flying Longhorns, celebrated its 50th anniversary April 8 at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center. About 250 people attended the event, which raffled off a free cruise to one lucky couple. More than 8,000 people have traveled with the Flying Longhorns.

After 16 successful years at the helm of the Texas Exes, Jim Boon stepped down in December to lead the new Texas Exes Scholarship Foundation. During Boon’s time at the Association, revenue more than doubled and membership reached an all-time high.

Alcalde Magazine Wins CASE Gold Medal for Article of The Year

In February, The Alcalde won a CASE Grand Prize Gold Medal for Best Article of the Year. The winning article, "A Warrior's Last Stand," ran in our September|October 2010 issue and following the story of Vietnam War hero and UT leadership professor Howard Prince. It is the magazine's fifth CASE medal and its second gold.

Texas Exes Mobilize to Protect Research and Teaching

When the UT system regents appointed a special advisor who said academic research lacks value, the Texas Exes voiced their support of research and the University's Tier 1 status. Outgoing President Richard Leshin emailed all members asking them to contact the regents, and the Texas Exes Board of Directors issued a unanimous resolution in support of President Powers.
Athletic Director Dodds Receives Distinguished Service Award

The Texas Exes honor alumni yearly with the Distinguished Alumni Awards, but rarely does the Association bestow the Distinguished Service Award to a non-alum. Dodds came to UT in 1981 and has led the Longhorns to numerous championship titles.
25 Years of Texas Hexin'

Students gathered to celebrate the 25th occurrence of a UT tradition: hexing the Aggies by burning red candles. In 1923, a local fortune-teller suggested a red-candle hex, and the tradition was resurrected in 1986.

Football coach Mack Brown met the oldest living Longhorn football player, John Henderson, BS '36, at the Longhorn Village retirement community. Brown gave Henderson a new jersey.

Texas Exes Chapters Celebrate 175th Anniversary of Texas Independence

March 2011
Along with other chapters across the country, the D.C. chapter of the Texas Exes celebrated 175 years of Texas independence. The D.C. event, held at the National Press Club, also honored the 10-year anniversary of the Archer Center, an elite D.C. internship program for UT students planning careers in public service.
