HookedIn Spotlight Series: Phoebe Cates

We’re back with another HookedIn Spotlight! Over 20,000 Longhorns are connecting on the world’s biggest burnt-orange social network, and these Longhorns deserve to be recognized. Phoebe Cates is a sophomore psychology major in the College of Liberal Arts. She uses HookedIn for career and industry-specific advice, networking, and investing in the future. We asked Phoebe to answer some questions about her time at UT and more.

How is UT contributing to your success?

UT is contributing to my success by giving me the perfect environment to grow and nourish my education. Austin is a wonderful and up-and-coming city with so much opportunity, but the university is such a diverse and vibrant place and has pushed me past my comfort zone to grow.

How is HookedIn helping you in your career journey?

HookedIn is helping me reach new horizons with my career interests. I am able to discover new positions and subcategories within career fields I never knew about. I have the opportunity to connect and interact with other students and employers.

Who are your heroes?

My heroes are Bong Joon Ho and Robin WIlliams. Bong Joon Ho, a Korean Oscar-winning director, aspires to provoke philosophical thinking and to exercise our right to question the universe around us and push the boundaries we set for ourselves. Robin Williams, the beloved actor and comedian, spent his life making people laugh and bringing happiness to Hollywood.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

The best piece of advice I’ve received at UT is that each and every one of us is writing our own story, and the second we applied to this institution our story began. It is our job to write our storylines and live our lives to the fullest extent, both academically and independently.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I consider my greatest achievement holding the drum major position for two years in my high school’s marching band. I was the first female junior drum major and both head drum major and president my senior year. My leadership and hard work throughout high school gave me the opportunity to experience such an amazing atmosphere like marching band in a position of leadership.

What are the essential items in your backpack?

My iPad, Apple Pencil, snacks, and headphones.

What is the most underrated or surprising thing about UT?

Something that is underrated about UT is the openness and friendliness of the students. No matter where you go or who you’re with, there will always be someone you know or have talked to in class before. You could go up to anyone and start a conversation and immediately have a new friend.

Are you involved in any student organizations on campus? If so, how is that impacting your college experience?

I am involved in Phi Delta Epsilon, a pre-med fraternity, and Camp Texas, a freshman orientation camp affiliated with the Texas Exes. These orgs have helped me to meet new people, exercise my leadership skills, and create meaningful connections for my career goals.

You have 24 hours to eat at any restaurant that has ever existed in Austin, where are you going?

I would eat at Veracruz All Natural. The tacos and delicious Aguas Frescas make me think of warm summer nights in downtown Austin.
