Two Top-10 Recruits Visit the Forty Acres
With no more on-field battles to look forward to until September, Longhorn fans turn once again to the recruiting war. The in-state showdown between UT and its Texas adversaries—most prominently Texas A&M—has been in focus this week as high school players are making their final decisions for next year.
Yesterday, the No. 5 and No. 9 recruits in the country (according to 247sports’ composite rankings) stopped by the Forty Acres for visits. The presence of Kyler Murray (Allen), the top quarterback recruit in the nation, and DaMarkus Lodge, a four-star wide-receiver out of Cedar Hill, struck a nerve with the Longhorn faithful for a few reasons.
Aside from both being wish-list gets for Coach Strong, both players seemed destined for College Station just a few months ago. Murray committed to A&M on May 28 and Lodge at some point was committed to A&M and is rumored to still be considering life as an Aggie.
But both recruits also tweeted images of the Longhorns jerseys presented to them.
Here is Murray’s:
And here is Lodge’s:
Notice something? That’s Tyrone Swoopes’ number. The embattled incoming junior quarterback could have the top QB recruit in the country—though take that with a grain of salt—plus a superstar who favors the number 18 as teammates.
In fact, maybe we should take every bit of speculation with a grain of salt. New Michigan head coach and possible maniac is trying to woo Murray out-of-state with an official visit to Ann Arbor looming. Lodge could very well look at the quarterback controversy that is sure to come at UT as a negative. What we do know is that Strong’s promise to Longhorn fans more than a year ago, to prioritize aggressive recruiting, wasn’t empty. Just take a look at this nifty chart over at 247sports. So many little yellow stars.
