Trending Now: iOS 7, Restaurant Row, Midi Rings

Midi Rings

From knuckle rings to two-fingered variations, we’ve seen many a ring trend come and go in the past couple years. The newest craze is midi rings: tiny rings that sit above your knuckles, instead of below them. Longhorns are following the lead of celebrities like Rihanna and Kristen Stewart by stacking multiple bands on their fingers for a dainty dose of bling. Midi rings, which have been making their way to stores since summer, can now be found at retailers like Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters.

iOS 7

Apple’s operating system got a facelift earlier this fall, and Longhorns scrambled to download the upgrade and take advantage of all its new features—and they weren’t alone. More than 200 million iPhones and iPads were updated with the software the first weekend it became available in September. The iOS 7 includes new colorful, “flat” 2-D icons, a Control Center with a handy flashlight app, and the new Pandora-like iTunes Radio. Upgraded camera capabilities include a new square shooting mode and a collection of filters inspired by Instagram. The speedier software also allows students to connect with apps—like the recently released UT iPhone app—more efficiently.

Restaurant Row

Just a stone’s throw from campus on Austin’s up-and-coming east side, Manor Road is increasingly becoming the haunt of foodies and hungry ’Horns alike. Storied favorites like Eastside Cafe, Mi Madre’s Restaurant, and Hoover’s Cooking are now joined by walk-up taco stand El Chilito and the recently opened School House Pub. Other newcomers include Salty Sow—where Longhorns can up their veggie intake with to-die-for brussel sprouts (and then indulge in scrumptious duckfat fries)—and Haymaker, a new restaurant and bar featuring regionally inspired sandwiches and 13 TV screens with the Longhorn Network. Thanks to its constant growth, Manor Road was dubbed “Restaurant Row” by CultureMap Austin earlier this fall.
