Rocky Mountain Exes Host Vince Young at Freshman Send-Off Picnic
Celebrating this year’s scholarship recipients and raising money for next year, alumni met in Denver for barbecue, bonding, and a chance to meet one very special Texas Ex.
Denver is almost 1,000 miles from Austin, but that didn’t stop the Rocky Mountain Texas Exes from hosting an awesome freshman send-off picnic with a very special guest—fellow Longhorn and football great Vince Young, BS ’13, Life Member.
Many of the approximately 115 picnic-goers got the chance to chat with Young and even snag a picture with him, all while enjoying games like cornhole and volleyball, as well as food, Blue Bell, and Shiner.
“Mainly it was just a good summer picnic—everyone running around eating barbecue and hanging out,” says chapter president Ashley Ricketson, BS ’06.
Two scholarship recipients who attended the picnic had the chance to speak to the crowd and introduce themselves. Additionally, Young spoke for a few minutes about how great it was to be at the picnic, how much he enjoys interacting with children, and how happy meeting Texas fans and future Longhorns makes him.
“His message was really about cultivating future Longhorns and how great it was to see Texas Exes really pushing the education and scholarships through all their fundraisers,” Ricketson says.
Though the numbers are still coming in, Ricketson estimates that the picnic raised around $2,000, which puts them in good shape to reach their goal of $10,000 for next year’s scholarship fund.
