Seismos Team Wins Texas Venture Labs Investment Competition

Seismos, the 2013 Master of Science in Technology Commercialization team, won this year’s Texas Venture Labs Investment Competition and will go on to compete in the Global Venture Labs Investment Competition in May.

The competition is hosted by UT’s McCombs School of Business, and its purpose is to help students develop new ventures by mimicking the real-world processes of raising venture capital. The Texas Venture Labs match local startups with entrepreneurial graduate students to work on projects that allow the businesses to evolve.

Known as the “The Super Bowl of Investment Competitions,” the global contest will feature 40 teams who won at other business school competitions around the world. As global champions in 2002, Private Concepts has been the most recent UT team to win the title. Last year, UT’s Athena Laboratories was named the first runner-up, and it was the first team from the technology commercialization program to make it to the finals.

In addition to having the opportunity to compete in this worldwide competition, Seismos received an automatic bid to the UT Horizon Fund Student Investment Competition, a chance to join the Texas Venture Labs Accelerator, and a launch package from the Austin Technology Incubator that involves personal mentoring from a team of experts.

Ramiro Palma, an Accenture Venture partner at Texas Venture Labs, says Seismos is a great representative for UT given their focus on the oil and gas industry. “We are excited to see Seismos and the other UT teams in this year’s competition as it proves the value of our program.”

The global competition is scheduled to be held at the Austin AT&T Conference Center May 2-4.
