Dallas Chapter Scholarship Dinner Raises $70,000

Raising $70,000 is no mean feat. But when it comes to scholarships, the Texas Exes Dallas Chapter doesn’t sweat it.

This Wednesday night, the chapter held its annual scholarship dinner at the Belo Mansion. The event raised approximately $70,000 for the chapter’s Forty Acres Scholars Program fund. “We’re proud to have completed our goal of funding a Forty Acres Scholarship a full year ahead of schedule,” says chapter leader Jeff Duchin, BBA ’98, Life Member, who co-chaired the event with Monica Murrell, BA ’02, Life Member. “It’s nice to see all different age groups come together for a great cause.”

More than 200 people attended the dinner, including UT President Bill Powers; Texas Exes CEO Leslie Cedar, BS ’89, MBA ’98, Life Member; State Rep. Dan Branch, Distinguished Alumni James Huffines, BBA ’73, Life Member, and Charles Matthews, BA ’67, Life Member; and many more big names.

Thirty items were auctioned off at the event, including an art print donated by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, LLB ’67, BA ’92, Life Member, and signed by deceased former head football coach Darrell K Royal, and current head coach Mack Brown. Other big-ticket auction items included a visit to the California wine country and tickets to visit with President Powers in his private stadium suite.

While the auction items, the food, and the company were all glamorous, the scholarship recipients were the stars of the evening. “It’s exciting to be making a lasting impact on the lives of students,” says Duchin.
