As Del Rio Chapter Grows, So Do Students’ Dreams

Fourteen years. That’s how long the Texas Exes Del Rio Chapter was inactive until it was officially rechartered in 2011. Now Del Rio-area alumni are making up for lost time.

“We’ve had a great year, and we’re on our way,” says chapter secretary and scholarship committee member Debbie Salinas, BA ’81, Life Member.

The Del Rio Chapter is also sending students on their way from the sleepy border town to the Forty Acres. In a May 31 ceremony at Del Rio High School, chapter members awarded three scholarships to Del Rio students Melanie Heide, Jodie Sutton, and Karla Rios, who will head to UT this fall.

“The students were so excited,” says Salinas. “We have a lot of single-parent families here, and the financial boost makes a difference.”

Next year, the Del Rio Chapter members hope to award five scholarships.
