Meet a Texas Exes Scholar: Grace Kim

The Texas Exes Awards for Scholarship and Leadership have long been the Association’s most prestigious and generous scholarships. Today’s Texas Exes Scholars are tomorrow’s leaders. Learn more about the program here.

1. What is your proudest accomplishment of your college career thus far and why?

Studying abroad in Santander, Spain, the summer after my freshman year opened my eyes to the vast world outside of my little bubble and introduced a whole new realm of learning goes beyond the limitations of classroom education. I was completely immersed in a new culture, living with a family who did not speak any English. Studying abroad was the perfect embodiment of college–a blend of freedom and responsibility.

 2. What’s one way that being a Texas Exes Scholar has changed you?

I have experienced the power of generosity and feel a responsibility to pay it forward. I had the opportunity to meet influential people who have demonstrated to me with their words and actions that it is not the breadth of knowledge we acquire, but how we put that information and our talents to use that gives meaning to our education.

 3. What have you enjoyed most about being involved with the Texas Exes? Why?

Getting to know the other scholars through our annual spring trips. Although we are all extremely busy throughout the school year and may not run into each other, being a part of Texas Exes is the common thread that brings us back together. I love that I am part of a cohort of such different, passionate, and driven individuals who will do amazing things in the future.

 4. What has you the most excited for next year? Why?

I am so excited to have enough room in my schedule to take exciting classes such as ballroom dancing, human sexuality, and the art and science of negotiation. Four years fly by so quickly and it’s easy to get caught up in degree requirements and extracurricular activities. This will be one of the few times in my life I can take advantage of my education and take courses not related to my major. It’s going to be an exciting year full of exploring Austin food trailers, meeting new people, and continuing to grow and develop as an individual. There’s no way to have a boring day at UT!
