UT Sophomore Named National Swimmer Of The Week After Breaking School Record

UT sophomore swimmer Laura SogerAll-American sophomore Laura Sogar has been named the National Division 1 Women’s Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com after registering the nation’s fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke last week.

Sogar’s winning time of 2:10.15 is a full three seconds faster than the second-quickest this year, and it displaces the previous school record of 2:10.35 — her own.

“Laura is just so talented,” Head Coach Kim Brackin said after the meet. “She has learned a lot. She did not have the summer she would have liked to have, but she was eager to show what she is capable of doing. She has trained really well. She is fit, and she is confident.”

Sogar also won the 100-yard breaststroke and finished second in the 400 individual medley. Imagine if the summer had gone how she wanted.

Junior swimmer Leah Gingrich and sophomore diver Maren Taylor also notched two wins each to help the Longhorns beat California 156-144 Oct. 16 in the opening matchup of the season.

“I saw a team that was eager to race, showed control, didn’t get ahead of themselves and didn’t get overconfident or nervous,” Brackin said. “They took it step-by-step, and I’m really proud of them.”

Texas travels to Bloomington, Ind., on Friday to take on the Hoosiers and the Michigan Wolverines.
