Campus On Lockdown As Police Search For Second Possible Gunman [Update]

UT TowerThe University of Texas campus remains on lockdown and warning sirens continue to go off as police search for a second possible gunman, reportedly wearing a beanie.

The University has confirmed that one suspect reported earlier in the PCL was male and is dead from what appears to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police have recovered an AK-47 from the scene.

The campus’ emergency siren came on around 8:40 and text messages were sent to students, faculty, and staff alerting everyone to seek shelter and lock the doors after there were reports of a man shooting an assault rifle near 21st and Speedway.

Austin and UT police, who train for live-shooter situations, are on the scene and searching in the area of Calhoun Hall and the Six Pack. The McCombs School of Business, across for the PCL, has heavily armed police searching it as well.

The Statesman has a photo gallery showing a tank-like SWAT vehicle patrolling the campus. The UT Shuttle buses are not running, and the University is now officially closed. All classes have been canceled.

The Daily Texan is reporting on Twitter that the University believes the second possible suspect is unarmed.

Students who live in campus dorms are being told to stay inside.

Anyone who works on campus has been advised to stay away from 21st and Speedway.

A UTPD desk sergeant said no injuries have been reported, other than the original shooter who apparently took his own life.

The Alumni Center is currently on lockdown. No one is being allowed inside.
