Athletics To Give University $5 Million

As UT faces a $29 million budget cut, the Athletics Department has agreed to step in and cover $5 million of that amount.

UT president Bill Powers and men’s athletics director DeLoss Dodds struck the agreement in recent days, and Powers announced it to the Faculty Council Monday afternoon.

The money will come from Athletics licensing and sponsorship revenues, as well as cash reserves, senior associate athletics director Nick Voinis said Tuesday.

Since the 2005-06 fiscal year, Athletics has given $6.6 million to the academic side of the University, Voinis said. The money has been applied to a broad range of purposes, including a film institute, the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and the renovation of Main 212, the Lee Hage Jamail Academic Room, which is set to open this month.
