New Indoor Tennis Center to Open in March
An $8.8 million project that could eventually bring the NCAA Tennis Championships to the Forty Acres is near completion. Construction of the Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center began in June of 2011, and the courts are on schedule to open this March.
The tennis center, located at the UT Golf Club in Steiner Ranch, will enable The University of Texas to host high-profile tournaments by guaranteeing a weatherproof venue for competition. The 50,000-square-foot facility, financed entirely by private gifts, will be outfitted with state-of-the-art amenities and feature six indoor courts, the most in Central Texas. There will also be four outdoor courts.
The Weller Tennis Center will be run by Steve Bryan, a two-time All-American and NCAA Singles National Champion who played for UT from 1988-90. Under Bryan’s direction, the club will offer men’s and women’s programs, league play, couples matches, junior programs, and summer camps.
Limited memberships are available to the club, and member benefits will include court time plus access to fitness, dining, and social events. With two months of construction remaining, nearly half of the allotted memberships have already been reserved.
