CBS’ Mary Walsh Named College Of Communication Distinguished Alumna
Mary Walsh, renowned TV reporter and CBS News executive, has been named a Distinguished Alumna by UT’s College of Communication.
The former Daily Texan editor and member of the Friar Society will be honored later today at the College’s honors day ceremony at the Texas Union Ballroom.
In her time as a journalist, Walsh has covered some seminal stories, including the explosion of space shuttle Challenger, the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, Geraldine Ferraro’s vice presidential campaign, and then-Vice President George H.W. Bush’s successful campaign for president.
The two-time Emmy winner now covers national security for CBS.
When asked in 2006 if she could change anything about the journalism profession, Walsh said, “I would go back to the days when television news was considered a public service and not a profit center for the networks. Sometimes we worry too much about how much a story will cost rather than the best way to cover it.”
Walsh joins Tex Schramm and Lady Bird Johnson as a Distinguished Alum of the College of Communication.
