Rumor: DeLoss Dodds to Announce Retirement Tomorrow

The rumor mill is churning yet again about UT men’s athletic director DeLoss Dodds.

In an article published by the Austin American-Statesman today, three anonymous but “well-connected” sources claim the 76-year-old AD will announce his retirement tomorrow afternoon. The claim has not been confirmed by UT Athletics.

According to the Statesman, Dodds had planned to announce his retirement today, but postponed after hearing the news about the death of legendary UT quarterback James Street. Dodds will reportedly stay on in his current position until Aug. 31, 2014, when he will transfer to a consultant role until 2015. He’ll collect a $1 million annuity next August.

The Statesman’s sources also suggest that President Bill Powers will lead the search to fill the position, with an ambitious goal to do so by Dec. 1.

Earlier this month, Dodds denied claims that he would retire by the end of the year, saying, “I love my job, I love the people I work with, and I love The University of Texas. I have no immediate plans to retire, but when I do, we will let everyone know well in advance so that people do not have to speculate.”

Dodds has served as athletics director at UT for 32 years, and is the ninth person to hold the position.
