San Francisco Alumni Set Sail for Scholarships

About 46 UT alumni set sail at the Texas Exes San Francisco Chapter’s second-annual boat party last weekend to raise money for UT scholarships—and soak up some sun.

Walt Moreno, BS ’70, JD ’73, donated a day on his custom-built Longhorn-themed catamaran on Saturday, May 25. The group sailed around the San Francisco Bay, enjoying views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, the San Francisco skyline, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Longhorns were able to see the city in a whole new way. “It’s gorgeous. You see it from land all the time, but on the water, it’s from a different perspective,” says chapter president Rick Valenzi, BBA ’98. “It makes you appreciate [San Francisco] more.”

In addition to the views, alumni spotted dolphins, seals, and jellyfish—but not a single shark.

“It’s one of our biggest fundraising events every year and one of the favorites for chapter members,” Valenzi says.

The event, which has sold out both years, raised more than $1,100 for the chapter’s scholarship fund.
