How UT’s Colors Came To Be Orange And White (Watch)
The school colors for The University of Texas have not always been burnt orange and white.
In fact, at UT’s first football game, the team wore gold and white. For some years, different teams tried various iterations — including bright orange, maroon, and blue — before finally UT put the matter to a vote.
Watch as Jim Nicar, director of the UT Heritage Society, recounts how close the University came to picking different colors.
Special thanks to Christopher Palmer and Taylor McCausland on the video.

And the colors were bright orange and white until I think 1967, when Darrell Royal ordered uniforms that were burnt orange – I think they were practice uniforms, and everyone hated it. I was a journalism student, working on the Daily Texan, and there was a spate of letters about it. It would be interesting to look at some Daily Texans from that time. I graduated and went on to a life that didn’t include the minutiae of UT life, and am now amazed at how Longhorns are sticking up for burnt orange, as if the bright orange never existed!
